Legal, privacy and refunds

One short page instead of four long ones. Plain words, because you should be able to read this without a lawyer sitting next to you.

Ko-fi

The decks are sold through a shop on Ko-fi. Ko-fi provides the shop and the checkout, but it is not the seller. I am, so your purchase contract is with me, and so are the cards, the updates and the answers to your questions.

What you may do with the cards

Buying a deck gives you a personal licence to use it. It is yours to keep.

The pictures and the audio inside a deck are licensed to me for use inside this product. That licence does not pass to you as separate files, so the images and the sound clips cannot be lifted out and used somewhere else.

Every level gets free updates: fixes, and new cards added to that level, reach everyone who has that level at no extra cost. The full set (A1 to C1) also includes a C2 level if one is added later. Topic packs are separate products and are not included in the full set or in any level. No particular level or pack is promised, and nothing here commits me to a date.

There is no copy protection A deck is a file. Nothing stops anyone copying it, and I am not going to spend my time trying. A low price and free updates are what hold this together, so if you find these cards useful, send people to the free A1 deck rather than to your copy.

Refunds

The decks are digital files that are yours the moment you buy them, so sales are final and there is no refund for a change of mind. The whole A1 level is free, so you can see exactly what you get before you pay for anything.

In the European Union you normally have 14 days to change your mind about something you bought online. For a file you download straight away, that right ends once the download begins, if you agreed to that when you bought it.

If a file is broken, will not import, or is not what its description says, write to me and I will fix it, send you a working file, or give you your money back.

Privacy

This site knows almost nothing about you, and none of it reaches me.

There are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels and no cookies. Nothing you do on these pages is recorded or sent anywhere.

Two small things can be stored in your browser: which language you picked and, on the help pages, which device tab you opened last, so the pages open the way you left them. These values never leave your device, and clearing your browser data removes them.

This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare's servers see your IP address when they send you a page, since they could not deliver it otherwise. Everything on these pages, the typefaces included, comes from this site itself, so no other company is contacted while you read.

When you get a deck, the checkout happens on Ko-fi's own pages. Your card details never touch this site and I never see them. Ko-fi shows me the order, which is what I need to answer your questions about it. Ko-fi's own privacy policy covers what it collects.

The decks themselves work entirely offline once they are in Anki. They do not call home and they do not know who you are.

The free add-on

Tarkib, the add-on for Anki, is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no account, no paid version and no server of mine in between, and nothing it does is sent to me.

It runs with your own keys. They are stored only on your computer, in the Anki add-on settings, are never synced, and each one only goes to its own service.

When you make a card, your word, any hints, the deck name and the instructions for the card go to the AI provider you chose. Image search words go to the photo sites you have keys for, and to Openverse as a last resort. The German text and the translations go to the Microsoft Edge read-aloud service for the audio. It is not an official API, so if it stops working, cards are still made, only without sound.

Cards made with the add-on are written by AI, and nobody but you reviews them, so please check each one.

How the deck cards are made

The German sentences, the translations and the grammar notes were written with Claude, Anthropic's AI, then reviewed and fixed by a person, card by card, over several rounds. I read every card before it ships, but I am one person reading thousands of cards, so some will still be wrong. Corrections go out in the free updates.

The words in each level are chosen from public frequency lists and open references for the CEFR levels. No exam publisher's word list is reproduced here.

The pictures in the decks come from Pexels and from public-domain images (CC0 or the Public Domain Mark) on Openverse. Their licences allow them to be used inside a product like this one. The deck audio is spoken by a neural voice from Microsoft Azure Speech on the paid tier, which permits commercial use of the audio it generates.

Reporting a mistake

If a card is wrong, write to me with the German word and what is wrong with it. This is genuinely the most useful thing you can do, for me and for everyone else studying the same deck. Fixes go into the next update, and updates are free.
