Put the cards into Anki
Pick your device below. The steps are a little different on each one, so only read the part that matches what you are using.
On a computer the deck file opens in Anki by itself. You do not need to find any menu.
- Install Anki Get it from the official Anki website and install it like any other program. It is free.
- Find the file you downloaded It is usually in your Downloads folder and its name ends with .apkg
- Double click the file Anki opens and shows you an import window. Leave the settings as they are and press Import.
- Open the deck and start You will see Tarkib German in your deck list. Click it and press Study Now.

You can import straight on the phone, but syncing from a computer is smoother. Both ways are here.
Easy way: sync from your computer
- Import on the computer firstFollow the Windows, macOS or Linux steps.
- Make a free AnkiWeb accountIn Anki on the computer, press the Sync button and follow the instructions.
- Install AnkiDroid and syncSign in with the same account and press Sync. The cards arrive with pictures and sound.
Direct way: open the file on the phone
- Download the file on the phoneSave the .apkg file to your downloads.
- Tap the fileChoose AnkiDroid when the phone asks which app should open it.
- Confirm the importLeave the settings alone and confirm.
One more step: turn on the keyboard
Most cards come with a second card where you type the missing word. On Android the keyboard does not open until one AnkiDroid setting is switched on. You do this once.
- Open AnkiDroid SettingsFrom the deck list, open the menu and choose Settings.
- Choose AdvancedIt is near the bottom of the settings list.
- Switch on Type answer into the cardYou will find it under the Workarounds heading.
- Restart AnkiDroidThe setting only takes effect after you close the app and open it again.
Easy way: sync from your computer
- Import on the computer firstFollow the Windows, macOS or Linux steps.
- Make a free AnkiWeb account and syncPress Sync in Anki on the computer.
- Sync in AnkiMobileSign in with the same account and press Sync.
Direct way: open the file on the phone
- Save the file to FilesDownload it in Safari and save it into the Files app.
- Tap the file, then ShareChoose AnkiMobile from the share sheet.
- Confirm the importLeave the settings alone and confirm.
What a card looks like
The front shows you the German word on its own. Try to remember it, then turn the card over. The back has the meaning, the picture, the sound and the two example sentences.
Studying in a web browser, free on any device
You do not need to install anything on your phone at all. Once the cards are on a
computer or an Android phone and syncing is switched on, you can study them in a browser at
ankiweb.net. It works on an iPhone, on a work laptop, on a tablet, anywhere you can open a
web page, and it is free.
- Import on a computer or on Android Follow the steps above for whichever one you have.
- Make a free AnkiWeb account and sync Press Sync and sign in. Your cards are then stored in your account as well.
- Open ankiweb.net in any browser Sign in with the same account and press Study. The pictures and the sound work there too.
If something does not look right
I see no pictures or hear no sound
On a phone this almost always means the sync has not finished. Open Anki on the phone, press Sync again and wait. Media files come after the cards.
Anki says the cards are duplicates
That warning is only about the editing screen and it does not affect your studying. You can ignore it.
I imported the wrong language
Import the file of the language you want. It replaces the meanings on the cards you already have instead of adding new ones, and your progress is kept.
